The Best of British Crime Fiction
Presented by our festival ambassador and brilliant crime author Kate Griffin, three of Britain's best crime writing talents, Colette McBeth, Julia Crouch and Claire McGowan come together to talk about writing their novels and the crime writing genre. Following the success of this panel at the Hay Festival they will talk about their exciting new projects and  include a few tips for aspiring crime writers.

Precious Thing by Colette McBeth is a searing portrayal of a vivid bond of love - and hate - between friends. Inspired by a friendship Colette had as a teenager, the novel explores what it feels like to be jealous of your best friend: "She was the person I sat next to in class on my first day at my new school and we became instant friends. She was the person I first went clubbing with. We fought a lot, we were competitive and we fell out. She made me miserable a lot and I'm sure I did the same to her. She was the person who could wind me up the most but also the person who I would turn to if I was in trouble. What I did in the book was use all of that and take it to the extreme."

Greece, 1980. You are a bright young woman with a brilliant future ahead of you. Then you do the worst possible thing a person could do to someone else: you are guilty of the greatest transgression. How do you go on to live a life?

Based in part on the diaries she kept while travelling as a teenager, Julia Crouch's shocking new novel "The Long Fall" looks at what happens when the past rears up to hit you in the face.

To the outside observer, Kate Barratt has it all: the wealthy husband who was once mistaken for George Clooney, the brilliant, feisty daughter, two homes in London and Cornwall, an understated designer wardrobe and a satisfying sideline as figurehead for a worthwhile charity. But all is not as comfortable as it seems, because Kate harbours a terrible secret that no-one in her current life knows anything about. A secret that hails back to a different time, when she was a skinny, dirty, punk-haired teenager who took too many drugs and nearly threw herself off an Athens hostel roof.

Then, one day, in a Starbucks near Tottenham Court Road Tube Station, that secret appears out of the past to face her. Can Kate carry on with the life she has built for herself? Or does it mean that everything is completely, irrevocably, changed?

The Dead Ground by Claire McGowan.  A month before Christmas, and Ballyterrin on the Irish border lies under a thick pall of snow. When a newborn baby goes missing from hospital, it's all too close to home for forensic psychologist Paula Maguire, who's wrestling with the hardest decision of her life.

Then a woman is found in a stone circle with her stomach cut open and it's clear a brutal killer is on the loose.

As another child is taken and a pregnant woman goes missing, Paula is caught up in the hunt for a killer no one can trace, who will stop at nothing to get what they want.

The Dead Ground will leave you gasping for breath as Paula discovers every decision she makes really is a matter of life and death...
