Trial by Jury (by Gilbert & Sullivan)

The entire show takes place in an English courtroom. Edwin the defendant, who has just abandoned his bride Angelina for another (the plaintiff), sits in a traditional cage in front of the judge's stand. The trial is presided over by the learned judge (played here by Bob Schroeder; in the original production the composer's brother, Fred Sullivan, played the judge). The jury, made up of all men, are all partial to beautiful Angelina. There is a gaggle of women (court observers or press corps) who are obviously partial to Angelina's position. The defendant, clearly outnumbered, carelessly tries to defend his position by saying he could marry one today and the other the next day. But the counsel for the plaintiff says "Burglaree!" and the judge hastily brings the trial to a close by saying that he'll marry Angelina himself. The jury agrees by saying that he's a "good judge too!"

Trial by Jury is the shortest of all the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas at only forty-five minutes (and has no spoken dialogue). "Trial" was originally presented as the with the comic opera "La Prichole" (Offenbach). The artistic directors decided there was too much good music out there to put an entire 2nd story on the program that would compete with such an exquisitely crafted Gilbert & Sullivan piece that it was better to present a sample of other light opera selections. The performance will open with selections from Franz Lehar's "The Merry Widow," Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," and Johann Strauss's (II) "Die Fledermaus" (translated as "The Bat"). Trial will close the performance, presented in modern trial dress.
