Literary Hertfordshire & Rediscovering The Wicked Lady
Literary Hertfordshire: Dr Pat Wheeler will introduce Literary Hertfordshire, a collaborative project between the University of Hertfordshire and Hertfordshire County Council. The project aims to explore the county's rich literary heritage by providing a snapshot of past and present Hertfordshire authors. The county has a wide range of connections with some of the world's most celebrated novels and authors and the aim is to build a place for local communities to discover their literary heritage. Pat will talk about the project, giving examples of the authors and their literary connections to the county.

Rediscovering The Wicked Lady: Dr Rowland Hughes will talk about his work producing a new edition of Magdalen King-Hall's 1945 best-seller Life and Death of the Wicked Lady Skelton. The novel is little known today, but provided the inspiration for the successful Gainsborough Studios film The Wicked Lady (1945), starring Margaret Lockwood and James Mason. King-Hall's novel draws on the legends surrounding the historical figure of Lady Catharine Ferrers, who lived in Markyate in the mid-seventeenth century and gained notoriety as a highwaywoman, particularly associated with Nomansland Common near Wheathampstead. Rowland will revisit this local legend, discussing the novel (a new edition of which will be issued by the University of Hertfordshire Press in 2015) and its relationship to the well-known cinematic version of the story.
