Five Fridays: Kathryn Guthrie and Adam Fry
Soprano Kathryn Guthrie and Bass-Baritone Adam Fry will present an evening of vocal works accompanied by pianist Andrew Hauze in the third concert of the 2014-2015 Five Fridays season. Taking place in Saint Paul's stunning neo-gothic nave by candlelight, the audience will have the opportunity to enjoy two talented singers performing in an intimate and up-close setting.
Kathryn Guthrie, Soprano
Soprano Kathryn Guthrie's sharp-witted interpretations of contemporary works are evenly matched by her finesse in traditional classical repertoire. Her 2012 New York City Opera debut in singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright's Prima Donna "outshone any other single moment on stage" (The Huffington Post). In 2015, she reprises the role in the cast recording of Prima Donna with the BBC Radio Orchestra. Additional credits with New York City Opera include the VOX 2012 concert and Alice/The Cheshire Cat in Unsuk Chin's Alice in Wonderland. Ms. Guthrie has worked extensively with American Lyric Theater, singing in Justine F. Chen and David Simpatico's The Turing Project and Elizabeth Lim and Jerome Parker's The Arrangement. In 2015, she premieres Joseph Summer's The Tempest in the role of Miranda with The Shakespeare Concerts, and appears on two of their recordings, "The Fair Ophelia" with Navona Records and "Orpheus and His Lute" with Parma Records. Ms. Guthrie is a winner of Astral Artists' 2012 National Auditions, and is the recipient of awards from the Metropolitan Opera National Council. She was a member of Glimmerglass Opera's Young American Artists Program and the Ravinia Festival's Steans Institute Program for Singers. She holds a Master of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory, where she received the Phyllis Bryn-Julson Award for Contemporary Music, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Connecticut.
Adam Fry, Bass-Baritone
Bass-baritone Adam Fry recently completed his tenure in Pittsburgh Opera's Resident Artist Program. While at Pittsburgh Opera, he performed such roles as Basilio in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia, the Mandarin in Barbe and Doucet's production of Puccini's Turandot, the 1st Officer in Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites, and the Marchese in Verdi's La traviata, and he recently returned for the role of the Poet in Philip Glass' Orphée. A winner of Astral Artists' 2013 National Auditions, Mr. Fry was also a prizewinner in the Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition, District Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and a Finalist in the Lotte Leyna Competition. Upcoming engagements include the role of Angelotti in Tosca for Dayton Opera and the Poet in Philip Glass' Orphée with Pittsburgh Opera. Upcoming, Mr. Fry is soloist in Haydn's Creation with the York Symphony Orchestra. Recently, he made his Erie Philharmonic debut as soloist in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and performed the roles of Nourabad in Bizet's The Pearl Fishers, and Pasha Selim in Mozart'sAbduction from the Seraglio. He returned to the Erie Philharmonic for Rossini's Stabat Mater and, in the 2012-2013 season, returned to Pittsburgh Opera as a guest artist in the roles of Count Ceprano in Verdi's Rigoletto and the Imperial Commissioner in Puccini's Madama Butterfly. Since making his Dayton Opera debut as the Imperial Commissioner, Mr. Fry has returned to Dayton for Angelotti in Puccini's Tosca, Mandarin in Turandot, and the Doctor/Servant in Verdi's Macbeth. He has also appeared as Don Magnifico in Rossini's La cenerentola with Union Avenue Opera. In the summer of 2009, Mr. Fry was a member of Glimmerglass Opera's esteemed Young American Artist Program where, as a cover, he went on to perform Don Magnifico in La Cenerentola and the Marchese d'Obigny and Dottore Grenvil in Jonathan Miller's La traviata. He returned to Glimmerglass in 2010 to perform Bartolo in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. He has also been a member of the Chautauqua Young Artist Program and the Lake George Opera Studio Program. While pursuing an Artist Diploma and a Master of Music degree at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, Mr. Fry performed such roles as Colline in Puccini's La bohème, Don Basilio, Man with a Cornet Case in Dominick Argento's Postcard from Morocco, and Dulcamara in Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore.
Andrew Hauze, Accompanist
A versatile musician and educator who is equally at home as a conductor, pianist, and organist, Andrew Hauze joined the faculty of Swarthmore College in 2006 at the age of 22, when he was appointed director of the Swarthmore College Orchestra. Mr. Hauze has since been appointed as a full-time Associate in Performance at Swarthmore, where, in addition to conducting the College Orchestra, he teaches classes in Conducting & Orchestration and Music Theory, coaches chamber music, and conducts the Swarthmore College Wind Ensemble. Mr. Hauze frequently collaborates as a guest pianist and conductor for Astral Artists. He conducted Mozart concert arias for Astral's 20th Anniversary Gala concert in the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts in 2012, and conducted works by Osvaldo Golijov and Oliver Knussen during Astral's 20132014 season. He also collaborates as a pianist for Astral's community engagement programming. Passionate about vocal music, Mr. Hauze served as a pianist for the Florence Voice Seminar for four summers, and has conducted productions of Dominick Argento's Postcard from Morocco for Curtis Opera Theatre, and Donizetti's L'elisir d'amore and Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice at Swarthmore College. He has also served as a vocal coach at the Bryn Mawr Conservatory of Music and for the CoOperative Program at Westminster Choir College. An active organist and choral conductor, Mr. Hauze holds Fellowship and Choirmaster certifications from the American Guild of Organists. In 2009, he received the Associate Prize from the AGO for the highest national score on the Associate examination, and in 2011, received the Fellowship prize and the S. Louis Elmer Award for the highest national examination score overall. Mr. Hauze is a graduate of the Conducting Program at the Curtis Institute of Music and also holds degrees in Music from Swarthmore College and Bard College at Simon's Rock
