Wellington Avenue United Church of Christ is honoring the Shawnee Vinyard Indian Settlement, members of the Council, and Poet /Activist Barney Bush, Chairman, on Friday, September 12, beginning at 6pm. The event will be held at the church, located at 615 West Wellington Avenue in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood.
Located in southern Illinois, the Shawnee Vinyard Indian Settlement is buying back homelands along the Ohio River. These same lands also are being sought after by powerful corporations such as Peabody Energy, the largest private-sector coal company in the world. These corporations want to strip mine for coal and "hydrofrack" for oil and natural gas, practices that destroy the land, pollute the air, poison the water, and de-populate once-cohesive communities.
The evening is free and open to the public. It will include music, film, poetry readings by Barney Bush and a light meal. We will raise funds for the work of the Shawnee Vinyard Indian Settlement through donations, sponsorships and the sale of crafts and artwork.
