Getting Lost in Prayer but not in the Prayerbook with Garry Koenigsberg
As we approach the Days of Awe, beginners and experienced davveners alike are invited to join this class on the liturgy of the High Holy Days. We will explore the structure of the ancient prayers, learning not only how to follow them as they unfold, but also how they can be used to open the heart. Along with the machsor itself, we'll also use Talmudic and other historical texts to explore where the service is meant to take us, and the tools it offers to bring our lives back into balance. We'll explore topics like why we formally cancel next year's vows, and the critical progression from "forgive" to "pardon" to "atone". We'll also see how the liturgy is designed to create joy and confidence, the irrelevance of guilt, and the surprising political message behind statements like "God is King."
Garry Koenigsberg has secular degrees from Columbia and Berkeley, as well as certificates for studies with Reb Zalman Shachter Shalomi, and at Yeshiva Toras Chayim and Yeshiva Avraham Tzvi in Brooklyn. Garry wrote and edited prayerbooks and machzors used at both Chochmat HaLev and Cong. Sha'ar Zahav. In addition to working with individual students, he teaches courses in liturgy, Talmud, and Medrash at several Bay Area congregations.
