PART OF HANDMADE WORLDS: A FESTIVAL OF PUPPET THEATRE (For more information about all the festival activities, go to www.handmadeworlds.org)
DOUBLE BILL! Michael Montenegro and Julian Crouch.
Asleep at the Wheel, Microcosm, and Giacco by Michael Montenegro:
Three separate pieces, all of which are an attempt to speak in the language of visual poetry. Images that may have come from dreams, both provocative and surprising, appear and are accompanied by words equally adrift of context. Somehow, in combination, the two create a meaning. The pieces express an underlying anxiety and a subtle desperation experienced by most human beings in such a way as to elevate it, perhaps discovering in itʼs ugliness a hidden and strange beauty.
Michael Montenegro has spent decades investigating and approaching the puppetry arts from all directions, filling objects and figures with humor and pathos to bring the inanimate to life. In this performance the audience has an opportunity to further experience and witness the artistry of this Master of Puppetry in an evening featuring his finest solo work. From the sublime to the absurd, each and every piece will delight or astound!
Birdheart by Julian Crouch and Saskia Lane:
Birdheart is the story of our relationship to ourselves, and the world around us. An egg lies on the sand, and from the egg is born a large sheet of crumpled brown paper. The sheet of paper, pulls elements up out of the sand, different hands, feet, heads. Sometimes the paper opens outwards and shadow images are projected in the heart of the paper figure. The figure dreams of a bird.
Julian Crouch is a Brooklyn-based independent director, designer, writer, maker and teacher whose career has spanned theatre, opera, ballet, film and television. Initially a mask and puppet maker and with much of his life based in London, Julian co-designed Charivari for Trickster Theatre Company in the 1980's, and in the mid-1990's co-founded London's Improbable Theatre Company. Improbable's productions of Animo, 70 Hill Lane, Lifegame, Angela Carter's Cinderella, Coma, Spirit, Sticky, The Hanging Man, Stars Are Out Tonight with Amici Dance Theatre Company, The Wolves In The Walls, and Panic have gained far-reaching national and international recognition.
