Moscow, March 1985. The last of the U.S.S.R. Another dark, funny, often vaudevillian fantasia from Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner, the celebrated author of Angels in America. Here the slapstick and the lunatic combine, in the words of critic Vincent Canby, to ask those age-old questions about good and evil, justice and its miscarriage and what is to be done about them.
"Why does Evil always triumph?" demands the gnarled Aleksii Antedilluvianovich Prelapsarianov to his Politburo comrades. The time is 1985, and these broken-down survivors of Russia's crumbling 70-year socialist experiment are about to witness the beginning of the end.
