AS220 Free Culture 2014: A Community Conversation with Genesis Breyer P-Orridge
Join us for a community conversation with AS220's 2014 Free Culture Award honoree, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. Moderated by Tabitha Piseno (artist, writer, curator, co-founder of R+K Projects) and Eli V Manuscript (performance artist, writer, musician, and MFA candidate in Brown University's Digital Language Arts program), this event will take place at AS220's Performance Space (115 Empire Street, Providence, Rhode Island) at 8pm on Friday, August 8th.Admission is $7, the event is open to the public.
AS220's Free Culture Award is an honor bestowed on artists whose work has made a significant contribution to grassroots, participatory culture and freedom of expression, and whose art and/or process embodies the organization's unjuried and uncensored mission. Genesis' work as a cultural engineer, poet, performance artist, and musician, has boldly traversed these realms through the seminal projects COUM Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV, along with h/er work in collage, photography, and body modifications. Since 1996, Genesis and h/er late wife, Lady Jaye Breyer, have collaborated in the development, through extensive physical alterations to their bodies, of a pandrogynous being named "Breyer P-Orridge" uniting them in appearance, form, and purpose. They use the term "pandrogyne" because it is liberated from extraneous connections "A word with its own story and its own information" they explain.
The conversation will be a forum to discuss Breyer P-Orridge's current projects as well as the explorations which comprise h/er journey to create new territory in which culture, artists, and art can thrive.
All are invited to join the discussion and participate with comments and questions. The first 90 people to arrive will be seated in the Performance Space, all others will have the option of standing room only or to be seated in the blackbox with live streaming.
On the evening of Saturday, August 9th, Breyer P-Orridge will perform with Psychic TV, on the main outdoor stage of Foo Fest 2014, as the headlining act.
