SLAM POETRY FILM SERIES PASS, a film festival in honor of the 25th anniversary of the National Poetry Slam, co-presented by The National Poetry Slam
The National Poetry Slam and the New Parkway are proud to sponsor the incredible summer film series, "Slam Cinema: Moving the Page from the Stage to Movie Theaters"
We invite you ALL to join us as we prepare to host the 25th Anniversary of the National Poetry Slam in Oakland, CA August 5-9th!

We'll be featuring four films this July to warm us up for the thunderous first week of August when 72 teams, 500 poets, 200 volunteers and thousands of fans will descend on the Town!  Join us for the month leading up this event to chill on couches, eat yummy pizza and drink cold delicious beer at the fabulous New Parkway while we enjoy these Oakland summer evenings together in anticipation of what is to come in August!  Each film will have a featured performance from some Bay Area legends, a short film project from former National Slam champions and then the feature film for the event!  Tickets for the Tuesday night documentaries (July 15, 22 and 29) are $10 each and we are pleased to partner with the Appreciating Diversity Film Series for a special FREE showing of Louder Than A Bomb on Saturday July 26th at 3pm.

July 15th, 7pm @ The New Parkway
THE FRONT MAN - THE OAKLAND PREMIER from the Director of Slam Nation! In his  5th feature documentary,  five-time Emmy winner and Spirit Award nominee Paul Devlin has created a rare non-fiction rock 'n roll comedy love story. The Front Man is an intimate portrait that evolves into a 27-year journey about a man so busy chasing his dreams that he risks missing what success really means. Jim Wood is bursting with personality, always ready to take center stage with his clever bawdy humor.  A talented musician, Jim is still dedicated to his New Jersey band Loaded Poets, together 20 years since high school. But as Jim grapples with the broken promise of rock 'n roll stardom, he must reconcile his joy of creating music and his wife Christie's desire for a child with a culture in which anything short of celebrity is failure.

This evening will feature the hilarious short film "Waiting" by Thadra Sheridan/ filmed by Jamie DeWolf and showcase live poetry performances by several Bay Area superstars!

July 22nd, 7pm @ The New Parkway-
SLAM PLANET - Mike Henry and Kyle Fuller's debut doc, Slam Planet: War of the Words, nails it but good, and, by virtue of its own innate lyricism, becomes an audiovisual ode in its own right, following close at the heels of the Austin Poetry Slam team as they head off to the 2004 Slam Poetry Nationals in St. Louis and keeping midnight company with ever-more-clever wordsmiths like the redoubtable Christopher Lee, a shattered mirror that nonetheless reflects inner glories. St. Louis? Never mind the Arch: Here's the Tower of Babble.

This Evening will feature a pre-film introduction and poetry reading by filmmaker Mike Henry, the premier of a short by Youth Speaks Center for Investigative Reporting and live poetry performances by several Bay Area superstars!

July 26th 3pm @ The New Parkway-
LOUDER THAN A BOMB - A Film by Greg Jacobs & Jon Siskel, Louder Than a Bomb chronicles the stereotype-confounding stories of four teams as  they prepare for and compete in the 2008 event. By turns hopeful and heartbreaking, the  film captures the tempestuous lives of these unforgettable kids, exploring the ways writing  shapes their world, and vice versa. This is not "high school poetry" as we often think of it. This is language as a joyful release, irrepressibly talented teenagers obsessed with  making words dance. How and why they do it and the community they create along the way is the story at the heart of this inspiring film.

July 29nd, 7pm @ The New Parkway
SLAMNATION - Emmy award-winner Paul Devlin gives you a ringside seat at the most compelling verbal slugfest of the century. "SlamNation" is an exciting look at the latest in literary blood sport: Slam Poetry.  This nonfiction narrative illuminates the competitive spoken word movement as it fire-spreads across America.  New York City's Slam Team journeys to Portland, Oregon to compete in  the National Poetry Slam, engaging in battle poetic with 120 performance poets on 27 city teams for 4 days of incongruous elimination bouts. Along the way they encounter Machiavellian strategizing, personal animosities, fulfilling triumphs and some truly electrifying language.

This evening will feature The Box: Teens in Solitary Confinement in U.S. Jails, Prisons and Juvenile Halls, brought to you by Youth Speak's Center for Investigative Reporting and feature featuring live poetry performances by several Bay Area superstars!
