tempestuous(ness) or HIStory is Told by the Victors
tempestuous(ness), or HIStory is Written by the Victors--is a cautionary tale. Artistic Director Scott Baker employs one of Shakespeares more psychologically complex works as a point of departure. His concept asks why Sycorax, former mistress of The Tempests island, is missing from the Bards play. A witch, single mom, and female ruler of a magical place, commanding monsters and fairies, yet Shakespeare reduces this fascinating characters life to a rambling expository monologue! Is this the Patriarchy asserting itself in post-Elizabethan England? An oblique comment on the rise of Colonialism against native peoples? Our investigation of these knotty political issues will be made vivid in a multi-disciplinary performance uniting magic, water in a processional performance.
