ONCE ON THIS ISLAND is a musical folktale of love, prejudice and forgiveness told by Caribbean peasants as they wait out a violent storm. It is the tale of a peasant girl, Ti Moune, who saves the life of a young aristocrat, Daniel, who is critically injured when his car crashes near her village. Ti Moune promises her own life to the god of Death to keep Daniel alive. After he is taken home, Ti Moune sets off to find Daniel and convince him to marry her. He falls in love with her and she becomes his mistress. But Ti Moune learns that Daniel's parents have already arranged for him to marry a girl from his own class. Goaded by the god of Death, Ti Moune tries to kill Daniel, but at the last moment her love for him triumphs. She fulfills her promise to the gods by giving up her life in exchange for his. The show is a magical combination of story, music and dance, celebrating this beautiful, mythical tale of the orphan Ti Moune, who was destined to love too much
for the human heart to bear.
