Patterns
Students in Patterns learn the underlying function of the standard comedic "rule of three" as it relates to improvisation and apply it at every level of their performance from warm-ups to group games and exercises to scenework. Students will learn to increase awareness of patterns as they form and to better utilize these patterns to collaboratively create the most rewarding comedic scenarios for themselves and their audience. The prerequisite is basic scenework instruction at an improv training center/comedy school. Patterns will be offered at Green Street Studios (185 Green Street in Cambridge) on Sundays in July from 2-4pm.
Cost: $75 for 4 weekly classes.
Dates: - Sunday, July 13 (Instructor: Rachel Klein) - Sunday, July 20 (Instructor: Rachel Klein) - Sunday, July 27 (Instructor: Jackie Arko) - Sunday, August 3 (Instructor: Jackie Arko)
Class max: 15.
Instructors:
Rachel Klein has been performing and teaching improv for over a decade. In Chicago, she trained at The Second City Conservatory and iO Chicago, where she also performed with the Harold team Chopper. Rachel has served as the Harold Program Director and Improv Program Director at ImprovBoston where she was a founding member and player-coach of the long-time Harold team, Maxitor. She is a co-founding producer of Fine Line Comedy where she performs and directs the resident cast Summer Boyfriend. Rachel has taught and created improv curricula at high schools and comedy schools across the country, and has taught workshops in her unique approach to comedy and improvisation throughout the continent. Her writing has been published in Thought Catalog and McSweeney's Internet Tendency, and she chronicles her thoughts about improv in her blog, The House That Del Built.
Jackie Arko, a founding member of Fine Line Comedy, has been performing, teaching, directing, and/or producing comedy for going on 10 years. She is a cast member of FLC house team Summer Boyfriend, the iconic Boston Harold team Maxitor, and improv super group Bearcats. In addition, Jackie co-produces and co-hosts The Kerfuffle, a family-unfriendly variety show featuring Boston's best comedians getting ridiculous. A long-time Harold teacher, Jackie has performed in and taught workshops at various comedy festivals on the East Coast and beyond. She is always looking for ways to incorporate her background in theatrical acting techniques into her improv instruction. She pushes students to listen to their scene partners with honesty and openness, to exist in the moment, and to explore - and stick with - the realities they create for themselves. Her teaching style is linear, transparent, and includes a variety of hastily-drawn yet highly-informative visual aids. The passion she feels for teaching and for long-form improv is evident from day one. Also, she swears in class. A lot.
