Smoke On The Mountain: Homecoming
Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming
Directed by Paul B. Crook
Amen and hallelujahthe Sanders family is returning to Durant!! Its October, 1945. The war is over and America is perched on the cusp of a new beginning. But theres also a new beginning at the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, where the Reverend Mervin Oglethorpe is giving his last sermon and hosting his final Saturday Night Sing. The Reverend has been called to preach in Wildorado, Texas and has packed up his care, his (very) pregnant wife June, and his cowboy hat and is ready to head out West. Tomorrow morning, Junes brother Dennis (Denises twinhes the boy) will take over as the congregations pastor. Join the Sanders Family as they send Mervin and June off with twenty-five bluegrass gospel favorites.
Much like the original production, Smoke on the Mountain (seen at OSF in 2007), Homecoming mixes touching and hilarious moments with fabulous music. Written by Connie Ray, Conceived by Alan Bailey, and with musical arrangements by Mike Craver, it is a fantastic evening of theatre. Each family member has their time to shine while sharing their stories and the music is guaranteed to have you tapping, humming, and singing along. With classics like Leaning on the Everlasting Arms, Standing on the Promises, and I Love to Tell the Story, Smoke on the Mountain Homecoming is a perennial family favorite for audience members of all ages.
