Francisco Gella, founding artistic director of NUEVO School of Contemporary Dance and Colabo Youth Dance Collective, presents the second annual Interstate Youth Dance Festival along with guest artists from founding artistic director Quinn Calahan's Rock Center for Dance in Las Vegas, NV and the Orange County School of the Arts in Santa Ana, CA.
Interstate Movement celebrates existing and emerging excellence in youth dance education and performance - from the deserts of Nevada to the sunny coast of Southern California. Opening the weekend will be two festival concerts; first, a matinee featuring the dancers (ages 8 - college) of NUEVO School of Contemporary Dance's pre-professional company performing solo and ensemble work from the 2012/13 season as well as selected work from guests, The Rock Center for Dance.
The evening show will feature the premiere of a new seventeen-minute concert-length work by artistic director Francisco Gella. The work is a one-of-a-kind collaboration with an intergenerational cast of dancers, based on poetry from his 11-year old niece Sophia. Music for the ballet has been composed by Paul Spaeth, a talented graduate of the University of Southern California's composition and film scoring program housed in the Thornton School of Music. Spaeth takes recorded readings of the poetry by four NUEVO students, Jessica Ann Yerkes, Lenin Fernandez, Lazarus Shapiro, and Chloe Aguirre, and integrated into a highly imaginative and powerful composition. Other exciting new concert dance works will be be premiered by choreographers Saleemah E. Knight, Gracie Whyte, and Jess Hendricks. Additionally there will be work featured by our talented guests from the Rock Center for Dance Pre-professional Company and the prestigious Orange County School of the Arts will round out the evening concert..
