I Hear America Singing -- War and Peace in American Popular Music -- Bill Weatherford & Dick Miller. This is a two session course June 18 & 25
War music and peace music have played in counterpoint through our history, touching hearts and changing minds. In this team-taught, two-session (2 hours each), ears-on course we will listen to lots of war and peace music from the 18th century to the 21st, and discuss whether types, topics, tunes and tempos confirm Walt Whitman's conviction that:
the "Subtlest spirit of a nation is expressed through its music -- and the music acts reciprocally on the nation's very soul. Its effects may not be seen in a day, or a year, and yet these effects are potent invisibly. They enter into religious feelings -- they tinge the manners and morals --- they are active even in the choice of legislators and high magistrates."
Bill Weatherford, a renegade instructor in the theater arts, and Dick Miller, an academic historian in recovery, are long-time takers and teachers of lifelong learning courses.
This is a two-session course. Purchasing one ticket entitles you to attend both sessions of this course.
