This workshop will cover the Site Planning & Design Division of the Architectural Registration Exam. We will review and assess the site for the impact of human behavior, historic precedent, and design theory in the selection of systems, materials, and methods on site design and construction.  We will also evaluate site and environmental conditions by assessing and applying systems, materials, and construction methods, incorporating principles of sustainability, and assessing design impact on human behavior.  The workshop will cover the incorporation of building codes, specialty codes, zoning and other regulatory requirements for inclusion in site design and construction.  We will review and consider the influence design decisions have on the election of systems, materials, and methods incorporated in site design and construction.  We will also cover how to assess and administer site design, including construction sequencing, scheduling, cost, and risk management.

John R. Dale, FAIA, LEED AP | Principal | K-12 Leader, Harley Elis Devereaux

John Dale has built a career around the creation of a wide variety of high performance learning environments that are catalysts for community involvement and student achievement. In stark contrast to the proponents of the 'factory' model that has dominated the pre-K-12 education environment throughout North America for the past half century, Dale has been a passionate leader in the creation of unique, context based solutions that place emphasis on carefully scaled small learning environments as standalone neighborhood schools or the building blocks of larger comprehensive facilities. These projects link the idea of high performance settings with sustainable design practices and many of his projects are notable benchmarks in the evolution of the green school movement. The result is a body of work that has made a major contribution to the practice of pre-K to pre-college school design, providing illuminating examples that support community advocacy, professional development and design education.

John is the National Pre-K-12 Studio Leader for Harley Ellis Devereux, serves as President of the Board for the A+D (Architecture and Design) Museum in Los Angeles and is on the Advisory Group for the Committee on Architecture for Education of the American Institute of Architects. He was honored as a Fellow of the AIA in 2008.
