Doubt, A Parable by John Patrick Shanley
The play centers on a confrontation between Sister Aloysius, an old-school nun, and Father Flynn, a younger priest with a more modern and open teaching style. When Sister Aloysius begins to have suspicions about Father Flynn and a 12-year-old boy at the school, she demands the priests confession and resignation. Father Flynn, however, denies any wrongdoing, and the boys mother sees only how the relationship benefits her son. Sister Aloysius has certainty, but no proof, and in the end there are no answers only doubt.
Doubt is about what happens when a person believes that Suspicion is just as good a motive for righteous action as Certainty is, if the stakes are high enough.
