The War of the Worlds (Live Radio Drama)
Be the "studio audience" for Jewel Theatre Company's version of Orson Welles' live radio drama, The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. On a nearly bare stage with a couple of microphones, watch some of Jewel Theatre's favorite actors voice multiple roles and a foley artist manipulate sound props to bring the story alive.
The War of the Worlds was first performed on the radio as a Halloween episode on October 30, 1938, and aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. The episode was directed and narrated by then future filmmaker Orson Welles who went on the air as himself to introduce the setting of the play, however, many people tuned into the program several minutes after the start and missed that introduction. The official sounding reports and interrupted bulletins that occurred throughout the episode apparently confused many listeners and added to the program's quality of realism. When some people learned of the Martians' ferocious and seemingly unstoppable attack on Earth, they ran out of their homes screaming, while others packed up their cars and fled.
We invite you to sit in the theatre as our studio audience, close your eyes, picture yourself sitting comfortably in your living room, and get carried away with the story.
