Changed by the Journey
Join us for an hour of unaccompanied choral music, with special guests, the Holy Heart of Mary High School Chamber Choir, directed by Robert Colbourne.
All cultures have tales of journeys. They're almost so widespread, that they are built into our very idea of what it is to be human. One of the most important elements of journey and travel is how it transforms us. In many cases, the destination is not the purpose behind the journey at all: it's the experiences along the way, and the changes they bring to our very selves. This idea of the transformative power of journey and travel is so essential to numerous cultures we see it in the ideas of wandering, or in the devotional acts of pilgrimage. For some, wandering seems pointless, but as a famous 20th century author once put it - not all those who wander are lost. The very notion of journey and pilgrimage is so important that in some cultures life itself is understood as travel. And fundamentally that it itself is transformative, changing who we initially are in such deep ways that we end up casting off our old selves, and come back to where we once stood seeing it and our selves either anew again, or perhaps truly even for the first time. This reflective nature of journey also means that sometimes you don't even have to walk or move for journeys to occur - they can be interior, they can be emotional, and have more to do with the introspection of yourself. Of course, the best journeys combine all of these things - good movement, good company, and good stories about experiences along the way. And a bit of sun won't hurt, either.
And so, let us take you on a journey at our fall concert as we move through works focused on transformation, travel, and the self. We'll be featuring works by Hogan, Esmail, Tin, Thorvaldsdottir, Sewpahagn, Gimon, Beatch, Sewepagaham, Lang, and the rich tribute to the great pilgrimage of the Camino by Talbot.
