Concordia University Department of Theatre: The Birds
Written by Yvette Nolan Directed by Jimmy Blais
My vision for The Birds is to create a bold, ensemble-driven production of Yvette Nolans adaptation of Aristophanes classic. This play reframes the original comedy through an Indigenous lens, asking urgent questions about community, leadership, and the search for a better way to live. For our students, this project is an opportunity to engage with a living playwrights work, to train in a process that blends text analysis with physical and vocal exploration, and to learn how to collaborate responsibly with material that carries cultural resonance. In todays society, The Birds offers a playful yet pointed critique of greed, power, and false utopian issues that are as present now as in ancient Athens. It is a chance for audiences and artists alike to laugh, reflect, and consider what it means to build a just community. - Jimmy Blais
