Prieto
"Prieto" is a powerful 60-minute autobiographical one-man show by Santa Clara County Poet Laureate and performance artist Yosimar Reyes. Dive into Reyes' journey growing up queer in East San Jose, seen through the eyes of his younger self.
This captivating play shares the story of Reyes' overprotective grandmother, who supports their family by recycling bottles, and his struggle to understand the financial disparities between his life and that of his friends. As neighborhood boys taunt him for his "feminine" behavior, young Reyes escapes into a world of books and '90s R&B. With an authentic and compelling voice, Reyes navigates the complex intersections of queer identity, immigration, poverty, and the undocumented experience, offering a narrative rich in both levity and celebration.
"Prieto" saw its world premiere production at San Franciscos Brava Theater in October 2022. Now on tour with The Living Word Project, Prieto has been showcased at San Jose Montgomery Theater, Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana (MACLA) in San Jose, CA, and in 2023 at the Chicago Latino Theater Alliance/Shakespeare Theater Company in Chicago, and the Center on Halsted.
