AEG Puget Sound Field Trip
AEG is leading a geologic field trip to West Beach at Discovery Park. This field trip will be an Introduction to Puget Lowland Glacial Geology, perfect for students, early career members, professionals new to the area, and anyone who would like to refresh their understanding.
The goals of this field trip are to:
1. Understand the scale of a Puget Lowland glacial advance, 2. Use the current nonglacial environment as an example of Olympia nonglacial time (Qo), 3. Recognize the typical Vashon glacial depositional sequence (Qvgl/Qvlc, Qva, Qvt, Qvr) and how each deposit relates to the glacier's position, and 4. Introduce you to how complex our subsurface can be for environmental and engineering geology problems.
Handout packets with maps and figures will be provided. Attendees should pack snacks/lunch, prepare for rain or shine, and bring your favorite field gear (gloves, pick, hand lens, etc.). Total distance is just under 4 miles with 400 feet of elevation gain on well-maintained trails that may be muddy/sandy if rain occurs. We will descend and ascend stairs along the South Beach Trail. Beach level can be sandy, gravelly, and wet depending on recent tide conditions. Specialty footwear is not required, but attendees should be prepared for variable conditions.
Attendees will depart the Discovery Park South Parking Lot at 9:00AM and will likely return by 1-2PM.
