Noh Chanting Workshop series - Experience the Voice of Noh: UTAI
Noh Society presents: Noh Chanting Workshop series (5 Sessions/ Starting on August 24th)
Experience the Voice of Noh: UTAI
Noh, the Japanese classical performing art established approximately 700 years ago, is widely known today as something to watch, but it was originally an art form meant to be performed. Through Noh chanting (utai) and Noh dance (mai), people engaged with the profound meanings behind words, and cultivated a balance between mind and body.
This summer, Noh Society invites beginners to join Experience the Voice of Noh: UTAI, a 5-part workshop series, starting on August 24th. You will experience utaithe vocal expression of Noh - through breath, voice, and movement. No prior experience is needed.
Session 1: Centered and Open Chanting from Takasago Sunday, August 24, 2025 2:00 PM 3:00 PM In our first session, well explore Takasago, a masterpiece of Noh about pine trees that celebrates harmony, peace, and eternity. You will learn to ground your body, breathe deeply from the core, awaken your senses, and explore the unique vocal power of utai. Instruction will be in Japanese & English.
The workshop will be held in a serene Zen temple in Manhattana perfect setting to reconnect with yourself, clear your mind, and awaken your awareness through the power of voice. Expect a meditative, energizing experience that engages your whole body.
Step into fall with renewed focus and fresh energy. Join us!
