Living on the Land Workshops: Composting at Any Scale
This workshop will take place at the Poulsbo branch of the Kitsap Regional Library. Learn from a local farmer on how to start a composting system scaled to your needs. Benji Astrachan from WSU Clallam Extension will first teach participants about how to begin composting, including necessary ingredients and common mistakes, and how to build a composting system that works for your space, be it an apartment balcony or dealing with large quantities of compostables on a small farm. Hell then lead a series of hands-on activities, such as identifying suitable compostables and the composition of an ideal compost. This class is a part of a new series called Living on the Land Workshops, a program by WSU Regional Small Farms for Kitsap, Jefferson, and Clallam counties. Living on the Land Workshops are for people living on small acreage, backyard growers, and anyone interested in connecting with their local food systems. Classes will take place online, where people can access them from the comfort of their home, and in-person at local farms for hands-on, interactive learning. Topics in 2025 will cover chicken and poultry care, raising and breeding small ruminants, seed-saving, food preservation, and composting.
