An Evening of International Hydrology (BHS Pennines Evening Event)
The BHS Pennines committee would like to invite you for an evening event at Leeds University to hear from two speakers about their experiences with international hydrology work. This will be followed by food (likely to be pizzas) and networking.

Date: Wednesday 18th June at 17:30

Event Timings:
17:30 - 18:00 - Arrive and get refreshments
18:00 - 19:00 - Speakers presentations and short Q&A
19:00 - 20:00 - Food and networking (optional)

Location: Lecture Theatre  LG.02, Leeds University Business School, Maurice Keyworth Building, Woodhouse, Leeds, LS2 9JT

Meet our speakers:

Mike Law, Beca, Technical Director for Hydrology and Water Resources. Mike has 35 years of experience and key skills in flood risk assessment, management and control, hydrology and water resource management, hydrometry, river restoration, and hydraulic modelling. Mike started his career in Leeds with the National Rivers Authority, and has previously worked for the Environment Agency and Weetwood environmental engineering consultancy, before emigrating to join Beca Ltd in Christchurch, New Zealand in 2009. He currently works on hydrology, water resources, and flood modelling/management projects across New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Region.

Mike's talk will provide us with a snapshot of the similarities and differences of working in the UK and the Australasia-Pacific region. From availability of data to the use (or otherwise) of standard methods for hydrology and modelling, he'll illustrate his talk with project examples ranging from post-earthquake and post-cyclone recovery projects in New Zealand to supporting low income communities in Vanuatu and supporting infrastructure in Fiji and elsewhere.

Rhiannon Bryan, JBA Consulting, Senior Hydrologist and Water resources modeller. Since joining JBA in 2018, Rhiannon has worked on a variety of hydrology, hydrometry and water resources related projects in catchments across the UK and internationally.

Rhiannon's talk will focus on pragmatic hydrology in data poor environments, using examples from projects across sub-Saharan Africa and on small island communities. She will discuss the benefits and pitfalls of both globally available datasets and local datasets, and some of the complicated and interesting hydrological challenges she has encountered.
