A History of Sea Ranch - Presented by its Architect, Don Jacobs FAIA
Sea Ranch, a coastal community in Sonoma County is renowned for its unique architecture and passive sustainable design. Opening his architectural practice at The Sea Ranch in 1970 Don Jacobs FAIA designed over 100 custom homes as well as holding the position of Design Committee Chairman before moving to Southern California in 1986. This past year Don was awarded the Distinguished Architect Award along with Donlyn Lyndon, FAIA and Obie Bowman, FAIA, by the Sea Ranch Association, for his body of work. In this presentation attendees will learn about the cast of characters that came together in the early 60s to create the most highly awarded environmental and sustainable community in the 1960s and 1970s. Don will discuss the land planning, landscape architecture and the architecture of the Sea Ranch and why they work so well (and why some of them dont). All of this, and some inside anecdotes on life at the Sea Ranch, will be shared.

Learning Objective 2: Attendees will learn how the Sea Ranch master plan emphasizes careful site planning and land conservation to preserve the area's natural resources and reduce the carbon footprint.
Learning Objective 3: Attendees will learn how green roofs, rainwater harvesting systems, and native landscaping promote biodiversity and reduce water usage to benefit occupants and the natural environment.
