Cascade Gardener In-person at McAuliffe Park in Kirkland
Join us in-person to learn about Integrated Pest Management (IPM).  Come learn about beneficial insects, pests, weeds, identification and life cycles, alternatives to management and reducing pesticides.

Description from the presenter, Laura Matter, Tilth Alliance:

During an IPM class my goal is to discuss alternatives to pesticides which requires me to speak about pesticides. In particular because though the alternatives I promote are generally prevention or mitigation techniques that dont involve chemicals of any kind, there are alternatives that are certified organic products and also people often turn to homemade sprays in particular that still are considered pesticides. I reference Grow Smart, Grow Safe and University extension information, WSU, OSU, U of Idaho, UC Davis, Cornell, primarily, and other ag colleges across the country that might have a pertinent pest management bulletin.

I focus primarily on:
IPM definition  what does this mean?
Prevention techniques to keep damage from happening  how to use mechanical barriers, timing of planting, observation to see first signs of potential conflicts
Beneficial Insects and other animals and how to attract them and why they matter  plant choices, setting of the garden, providing water
Tolerance levels, when to act, and when to know not to act based on signs beneficial insects are at work or present
Knowing the life cycle of both pests and beneficials including talking a bit about mammals and birds that can be pests
Being aware that ANY product used as a spray to interrupt the life cycle of an insect has potential harm to beneficial insects as well as harm bodies of water if drift happens (soap and oil based sprays)
Looking for real life examples in a garden setting
