Zemya World Folk Ensemble
Passionate about the unifying power of music, the folk ensemble Zemya is inspired by some of the world's most colorful cultures. Their performances feature vocal selections from Bulgaria, Greece, Russia, Georgia, Croatia, Israel, South Africa and the British Islesmusic they interpret with their own shimmering, exquisite harmonies and infectious energy.
Sharing both name and spirit with the Bulgarian word for "earth," Zemya has been delighting and surprising Maine audiences of all ages for more than 12 years. Their voices weave together lush, expressive, often haunting melodies that transport listeners to far corners of the globe.
Directed by Deborah Gordon, the ensemble includes Joy Ahrens, Barbara Beckelman, Hildy Ginsberg, Abby King, Mischa Schuler, and Ann Swardlick.
