Human sculptures and acrobatic encounters animate the tale Communitas. Four performers tumble, climb, fly and fall in a physical language of storytelling in action. A largely improvised musical score featuring contra- and classical- guitar, harmonica, and a reed flute intensifies the relationship between performers at the edge of their abilities and an audience witnessing genuine risk. By the end of its 65 minutes, performers will have come face-to-face with their own limitations and exhaustion, and together strive to overcome them. Oscillating between the silly and the profound, the ordinary and the extraordinary, Communitas delights and inspires audiences of every age.
Almanac Dance Circus Theatre is the collaboration between and artistic home for Nick Gillette and Ben Grinberg. After meeting as members of the inaugural class of the Pig Iron School for Advanced Performance Training in 2011, they began collaborating on shorter comedic works, and focussed their training in hand-to-hand acrobatics at the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts, where Almanac is now the resident company. In 2013, the Philadelphia-based artists captured the attention of New York City's dance community. They were selected for the prestigious Fresh Tracks residency at New York Live Arts, where, in December, a short excerpt of Communitas was performed to great acclaim. Former editor of Movement Research Performance Journal Ursula Eagly remarked "In [their] bodies, function holds emotional content.Between [them], the precision a balance requires is the same as tenderness. This is the emotional force of function."
"We are trying to show ourselves honestly in every moment, stripping away artifices to create a universal story. Whenever a part of the piece seems too nameable or easy to describe with words, we move back toward abstraction, so that each audience member can follow a narrative but have a unique and individual experience of what that narrative is," Grinberg says of the work.
"At the end of the day it's not even a metaphor. Ben and I literally lean on, lift, and support one another. We're showing the physicalization of our trust on stage," says Gillette.
*On Saturday, May 24th at 8pm, the performance of Communitas will be preceded by a special guest performance from No Face Performance Group. For more information: http://nofaceperformance.org
