An Evening with Richard Walker, Javan K. Bernakevitch and Food Forestry - Gardening for a 1000 Years
"GARDENING FOR A 1000 YEARS " This keynote talk by Richard Walker one of the world's most esteemed cold climate food foresters and takes you on a journey into the very heart of what it means to grow a forest garden and the benefits on your health and life.
He will speak to the fact that our soil is our most valuable inheritance and just how through forest gardens we can give back to that as well as how to trap carbon and store water. How this model, a unique nature-based system of growing edible landscape meets our food, spiritual, emotional and economic needs both personally and on a community, social, and cultural level.
Before Richard's keynote, Javan K. Bernakevitch of Permaculture BC will be giving a short presentation on his recent work creating the Practical Permaculture Institute of Kenya with Michael Nickels of Seven Ravens Permaculture Farm. In a place where 3 meals a day can be a luxury Javan will explain how food forestry is providing income and livelihood to thousands of Kenyans.
Food forest gardening, on a global level, is becoming a game changer. Here in Victoria it can be game changer. We will look at flooding and mudslides and how food forests can mitigate manmade terrain change which precipitates disastrous flooding. Through forest gardens we can enhance pollination which is fundamental to food security . Beauty, abundance and quality of life is what you harvest from a forest garden, and the very real sense of being "home "...the best place to be!
If you needed even more incentive to come and support the talk, proceeds of the nights talk will be going to Victoria's own food forest, Spring Ridge Commons.
