Vegan Chitlins and the Artist Formerly Known as the N-word
Imagine a world where freedom is defined as the legislation of existence. A world where freedom shows up as violence, restraint, and enclosures. Imagine a world where freedom is synonymous with oppression, injustice and death. A world where constraint and negation are markers of a life lived and lost. Carry these feelings with you. Hold on to them. Wear them as armor, weight, adornment and trauma, Now, let it all go and step outside.

Vegan Chitlins and the Artist Formerly Known as the N-word (Vegan Chitlins) is a theatrical love story told from the perspective of a shapeshifter called BLACK. BLACK travels through portals of blackness byway of a black vortex emerging as black as black can be chanting the incantation What will they see? Will they see? What will they see? Why cant they see? You dont see me. BLACK negotiates time and space through atmospheric traces of movement, migration and the mobilization of their own madness. What does it mean to refuse the limitations of the body by refusing the possessive regulations imposed on the body? This darkie-town testimonial post-colonial conceptual revival, conceived and performed by Trebien Pollard, is a visual narrative of the black experience traverses through documentation and symbols of reality existing beyond articulation as a state of nonexistence.

Vegan Chitlins is the confessions of an emancipated negro and their heart, roaming in an elegy of a country church yard - barred and scarred - by the shadows of an ancient servitude and the long observation of weeping and wailing witnesses, wading in waters while waiting beyond the door of no return for an imitation of a life and the realization you will never return.

Trebien Pollard received his training at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Florida A&M University, Florida State University, Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance, and from a number of gifted teachers and choreographers. Pollard has performed with many dance companies, including RIOULT, the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, Bebe Miller Company, Urban Bush Women and Pilobolus. He appeared in the jazz musical opera, The Hang by Taylor Mac and Matt Ray.

As a choreographer, Pollard has choreographed and toured with RASA recording artist Nomad and choreographed for director William Electric Blacks The Hamlet Project, The Damned: A Rock Musical and Frankenstein: The Rock Musical. He performed in and co-choreographed with Jawole Willa Jo Zollar the opera, The Ritual of Breath is the Rite to Resist by Jonathan Berger and Vievee Francis. Trebien appeared in the feature film Ghostlight, starring Richard Move as Martha Graham.

Pollard has been on faculty at the American Dance Festival, Queens College, Adelphi University, the University of Southern Mississippi, Goucher College, Middlebury College, Montclair State University, Marymount Manhattan College, University at Buffalo, Dartmouth College, and is currently on faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University, as well as a licensed certified GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® trainer. He earned his MFA in dance from New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and his BS in mathematics education from Florida A&M University.
