Swinging in the Park with Joplin and Other Works
Centennial Youth Ballet presents Swinging in the Park with Joplin and Other Works at Looby Theater, 2301 Rosa Parks Blvd. The performances are sponsored by Friends of Metro Dance and the Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation,
Performances will take place on Friday, April 18 at 7:30 pm and Saturday, April 19 at 7:30 pm.
The performance is a mixed-bill program that reflects the ever-widening spectrum of ballet choreography being presented today and gives Centennial Youth Ballet students the opportunity to learn and perform a range of styles. "Flower Festival in Genzano" is a classic Bournonville piece from the mid-19th century and includes his characteristic quick footwork, graceful arms and torso, and the long skirts typical of ladies of the era. "Our Little Women", a quartet inspired by the story of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, has the dancers moving more dynamically across the stage while brothers try to one-up each other in a variation from "Don Quixote". "Entwined" brings in a more contemporary style utilizing parallel positions, intricate formations and floor patterns, and more streamlined costumes. The Jazz Age-influenced choreography of "Joplin" adds a little swing into the mix and incorporates the use of props. The variety represented in the program is sure to delight and will be a wonderful celebration of spring!
