GHOSTS IN BAGHDAD presented by Working Spark Theatre
"Deines weaves an intricate tale of intrigue and suspense. Director John Murphy does a stellar job of directing his A-list cast." - The Vancouverist
"An ambitious new drama by Vancouver playwright Michelle Deines who has created a ghost story where all four characters are haunted by myths, memories, and and real life monsters including Saddam's regime and the chaos created by their American liberators. She's also asking big questions in her small theatre and it's exciting to see her asking those big questions in a fleshed out full length play." - Mark Leiren-Young @ The Vancouver Sun
Directed by John Murphy, "Ghosts in Baghdad" is about one man's struggle to save all that he loves from the forces of greed and warfare.
Traumatized by years of living in a war-torn city and weary from a lack of purpose, Khalil (Alec Willows) finds solace in the closed halls of the Iraq Museum, while Malika (Sarah May Redmond) struggles between her desire for a secure life, and her loyalty to Khalil. Their isolation is shattered, however, when a young street kid named Dawood (Gili Roskies), comes to the museum. He says he has an ancient maska prized artifact that has been missing since the 2003 looting. Unknown to Khalil, Dawood has been sent there by street hustler Hamza, who has an agenda of his own. Secrets are uncovered, bringing the characters into a heated final confrontation brimming with desperation, betrayal, and a fight over the very survival of culture itself.
"Ghosts in Baghdad," won Honorable Mention in the 2013 Theatre BC Playwriting Competition.
