We Have To Do Something by John Barrow
We Have To Do Something, recreates a turbulent chapter in Manhattanville's history when David Rockefeller organized Columbia, Barnard, Riverside Church and other institutions to stop the encroachment of slums. Robert Moses quickly joined them, and the federal government provided funding. The neighborhood fought back vigorously. This conflict of good intentions and local resistance in the 1950s resulted in the demolition of many blocks and the creation of a middle-income co-op and a public housing project. The issues of the 1950s--affordable housing, gentrification, crime, schools--are still our issues today. A large cast of seasoned actors and newcomers brings it all to life.
