Photography and Literature: A Window Into Other Worlds
Much like a great novel, a photograph has the ability to instantaneously transport the viewer to another place, far from their own day-to-day reality. In this unique Beyond the Book event, we'll compare and contrast these two different, equally powerful mediums literature and photography.
We'll begin the day with a book club discussion of Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie led by our own Julie Robinson. You'll enjoy the conversation over a continental breakfast at the charming Café Chez Marie. Americanah, one of the most celebrated books of the past year, paints its own vivid picture of a young man and woman from Nigeria who trace the difficult paths of migration, exile, and homecoming in a rapidly changing, globalized world. It is a moving story that will capture your heart and give you a deeper understanding of life in Nigeria and race in America.
After breakfast we'll reconvene at the nearby Annenberg Space for Photography. In conjunction with the October issue of National Geographic Magazine,The Annenberg has curated a compelling look at how one picture can impact how we view our world and humanity as a whole. We will enjoy a private, curated tour of The Power of Photography,an exhibit highlighting the Annenberg's ongoing dedication to using photography to explore, educate, inspire, document and preserve the world around us.
