"A winning, magnetic performer" - San Francisco Chronicle "A vibrant charge of original talent" - Los Angeles Times "A motormouth verbal energy and an appealing emotional honesty" - The New Yorker "A must-see" - Jerry Friedman, KGO radio Mr. Copeland's funny, trenchant and poignant monologue reflects on his experiences growing up African-American in San Leandro in the 70's, when racial tensions there were at an all time high. Not A Genuine Black Man has had successful runs in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York, was adapted into a book by Mr. Copeland, and is being adapted for an HBO special by legendary producer Rob Reiner.
Altarena is extremely proud to count such distinguished artists as Mr. Copeland among its Honorary Board of Directors and to provide the exclusive Alameda venue for his landmark one-man show.
