Doug Fine: Petroleum-Free in One Year
Doug Fine is living green while still plugged inproof that you don't have to abandon high-tech comforts to reduce your dependency on oil and move toward sustainability. After just a year, the author (Farewell, My Subaru) and NPR environmental correspondent has eliminated more than 90 percent of his fossil-fuel use while giving up none of his appliances, including a washing machine, a laptop and some booming stereo sub-woofers. He did hit a couple of potholes on the road to sustainability (coyote attacks on his chickens, and a shocking encounter with solar panels), but the message in Fine's inspiring and entertaining slide show is that anyone can adapt seamlessly to a petroleum-free life, through solar power, vegetable-oil-powered cars and a sustainable diet. See Fine's story, and solar-powered ranch, at www.youtube.com/watch?v=evjICqDFXgI. Presented by the Town Hall Center for Civic Life, with University Book Store.
