Vernal Utah's Storytelling Festival
Save the dates! On Thursday and Friday, February 20 & 21, 2014, VernalUTAH's Storytelling Festival will return as a winter event with featured storytellers Syd Lieberman, Lyn Ford, and Michael Reno Harrell. As 2014 event director Aaryn Birchell observed, "The true magic happens as we feel their stories start the seed of stories deep within our students, our community, ourselves."

Syd Lieberman is an internationally-known storyteller who was honored with the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Storytelling Network. Lieberman writes and performs stories about topics as varied as the Johnstown Flood of 1889, the fighter pilots of World War I (commissioned by the Smithsonian for the National Air and Space Museum), the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Mars rover landings (for NASA and the International Storytelling Center).

Lyn Ford describes herself as an Affrilachian storyteller: "of African American heritage and history, from the region called Appalachia." She is also a Laughter Yoga leader and a recording artist with award-winning CDs. Ford's telling style is rooted in her family's multicultural storytelling traditions, which she describes as "enriched with call and response, choral response, rhythm and rhyme, humor and heart."

Michael Reno Harrell is a songwriter, veteran storyteller, and multi-talented entertainer from the Southern Appalachians. Harrell's website compares his stories to his granddaddy's pocket knife, with "a well-worn and familiar feeling, but razor sharp and with a point." His stories reflect not only his southern upbringing but also his travels throughout America, the British Isles, and Europe.

The popular Vernal UTAH Storytelling Festival, founded by former Vernal resident Lori Olmstead in 1993, will include public performances at 7:00PM on February 20 and 21. Special events with the storytellers for local students and teachers will be available during each day. For more information about the featured storytellers and the 2014 storytelling festival schedule, access the event website at http://vernalstorytelling.blogspot.com/or email vernalutahstorytelling@gmail.com for more information.
