Trio Arkel Presents: LAND OF THE KALEVALA
TRIO ARKEL, Canada's foremost classical String Trio, presents the second concert of its inaugural series!
The ancient songs and proverbs of the Kalevala are the Illead of the Finnish people, describing beliefs and mythologies reaching thousands of years into the past. To this day, the poetry of Finnish expression infuses the world of the arts with wondrous imagination. The compositions on our program are the sonorous and flexible creations of minds of genius.
We begin with string trios by Jean Sibelius and Kaija Saariaho, whose Cloud Trio she composed while under the spell of the French Alps. Then we welcome guest star artists from the National Arts Centre Orchestra- Yosuke Kawasaki, Concertmaster, Jethro Marks, Principal Viola, Noémi Racine Gaudreault, First Volin and Sean Rice, Second Clarinet- to perform our central piece, Lindberg's Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, a major work that rivals Escher with its complexity and capacity for intrigue.
