Waipa Foundation Hosts An Afternoon with Brother David Steindl-Rast
Please join us for an afternoon with Brother David Steindl-Rast at the beautiful Waipa Foundation, just outside Hanalei on the North Shore, Kauai.
About Brother David
David Steindl-Rast became a Benedictine monk in 1953 at Mt. Saviour Monastery in Pine City, New York. In 1966 he was officially delegated to pursue Buddhist-Christian dialogue and began to study with Zen Buddhist masters. He co-founded the Center for Spiritual Studies with Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu and Sufi teachers. He also co-founded A Network for Grateful Living, an organization dedicated to gratefulness as a transformative influence for individuals and society. Fervently committed to what he calls "mysticism in action," Br. David has been an outspoken advocate for social justice, environmental issues, and international peace. He has written and contributed to well over thirty books, and with famed physicist Fritjof Capra, co-authored Belonging to the Universe, recipient of the prestigious American Book Award. His affinity with the Buddhist tradition produced The Ground We Share: Buddhist and Christian Practice, co-authored with Robert Aitken Roshi.
Presently, Brother David offers a resource to put the principle of gratitude into practice through Gratefulness.org, an interactive website where visitors from over two hundred countries have an opportunity to light a virtual candle in an exercise of mindfulness, serenity, and solidarity. "It is the integral practice of grateful living," says Brother David, "that unites Christianity, Buddhism, and all the religious traditions."
About the Waipa Foundation
For 20 years, Waipa Foundation has worked with the community to manage the ahupua'a of Waipa as a Native Hawaiian learning center and community center where folks can connect with the 'aina (land and resources), and learn about our local values and lifestyle through laulima (many hands working together).
Waipa is a place for culturally relevant practices, teaching, and sharing while we learn again how to live in balance with our 'aina; Restoring health and vibrance in the ahupua'a and in ourselves too!
