Series - Little Bit Off: AWP Offsite Events at NWFF [In-Person Only]

About
Northwest Film Forum presents an AWP offsite event, featuring readings from artist Takahiro Yamamoto and scholar Jang Wook Huh along with a dance performance by Seattle-based choreographer Heather Kravas. Yamamotos latest book, Opacity of Performance, takes its title from his 2022 performance installation at the Portland Art Museum.

This dynamic reading expands upon the books investigations into visibility and objectification and uses the lens of choreography to question the opacity of performance.

Bios:
Jang Wook Huh
Jang Wook Huh is assistant professor of American ethnic studies at the University of Washington. His research and teaching focus on topics including the global circulation of Asianness and Blackness, the politics of the outsider, and the relationship between aesthetics and alternative modes of being. He is currently completing a scholarly monograph on the literary and cultural connections between Black liberation struggles in the United States and anticolonial movements in Korea during the Japanese and American occupations.

Heather Kravas
Since 1995, Heather Kravas has investigated choreographic, improvisation and collaborative practices in contemporary performance to explore the edges of choreography and her artistic abilities. Punk, feminist, precise and extreme, her work is continually built, wrecked and reconstructed to activate curiosity and examine relationships between art, power, agency and desire.

Takahiro Yamamoto
Takahiro Yamamoto is a multidisciplinary artist and choreographer based in Portland, Oregon (Cowlitz, Clackamas and Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde). His current investigations revolve around the phenomenological effects of time, embodied approach to the presence through philosophical notion of nothingness, and the social/emotional implications of visibility. He recently published a book Opacity of Performance along with a durational performance installation with the same title at Portland Art Museum in 2022, which explores the tension between visibility and invisibility, and how we carry agency in our own subjectivity and disappearance in the society. His latest project NOTHINGBEING will be presented at On The Boards in Seattle, May 18-21, 2023.

Coming up at On the Boards!
Takahiro Yamamoto | NOTHINGBEING
Explore what the presence of nothingness and being looks and feels like.

NOTHINGBEING is a live performance project that investigates ways to embody the presence of nothingness and being, holding spaces that we could easily dismiss and considering possibilities for the unfiltered self. Yamamotos choreographic approach addresses the notion of presence from multiple performative modalities such as moments of highly physical improvisational movement, a communal meditation, and internal activation of sensory memories.
