Tevye is the pious, hardworking milkman in the Russian village of Anatevka. It is the year 1905, and Tevye and the rest of the Jewish townspeople struggle to maintain their traditions during changing times. Conflicts with their Orthodox Christian neighbors, the Tzar's military men, and even with town's younger generation test Tevye's dedication to his beliefs. Tevye and his wife, Golde, have 5 daughters, whom they hope will be matched with successful husbands by the towns' matchmaker, Yente. When Yente suggests a match for Tevye's oldest daughter, Tzeitel, with the elderly widower, Lazar Wolf, Tzeitel and her childhood sweetheart, Motel, convince Teyve to break from the tradition of a "Papa-arranged" marriage and create a "love-match" of their own. Tzeitel's younger sisters, Hodel and Chava, quickly follow their older sister's example, and ask Tevye to allow them to marry for love as well. Tevye reluctantly agrees to allow Hodel to marry the revolutionary Perchik, and is crushed when Hodel leaves the village to follow him in his quest to change the world. Chava finally asks too much of Tevye when she brings Fydeka, a Christian Russian soldier, home to ask for Tevye's blessing on their love. Tevye cannot accept their marriage and banishes Chava from his sight and from his heart, just as the Czar issues the edict that Tevye and all the Jewish neighbors must leave their beloved town of Anatevka forever.
