"Orphans and bAstards" is inspired by Ms. Sell's own experience of being adopted and searching for her biological family: primarily the conflict that to be a "good" adoptee, an adopted child must silence his/her need to know the truth about his/her own identity. Ms. Sell explains, "All my life people have asked me what it's like to be adopted. On the surface, it's the same as any other family. But underneath lies an un-ignorable and often un-askable question of identity. Adoptive parents often feel rejected by this quest, and that is understandable, but my message to parents is that it is not about them at all - some adoptees just need to know. As options for parenthood change to include not only orphaned and unwanted children, but also donated sperm and eggs, Hyperbole Dance offers some perspective on how the abandoned/donated/adopted/purchased child is affected."
Named for the literary concept of an exaggeration for dramatic effect, Hyperbole Dance aims to convey a narrative and provoke an emotional response. Established in 2012, the company's work explores and reflects human experience through a theatrical blend of modern, jazz and other dance styles. Ms. Sell describes her work saying, "For me, dance is about expression. Expression of what I don't know how to say with words. Expression of what I am afraid to say or maybe not supposed to say. In every moment where I am struck speechless by emotion, there is a dance." Ms. Sell's choreography has been described by others as "from the heart", "mesmerizing", and "evocative & powerful".
