2nd Annual Tuscaloosa Evening of African Film

Tuscaloosa will host its 2nd annual program of African Films at the Bama Theater on Saturday, February 22nd 2014. Three movies will be presented on this special night of African movies in Tuscaloosa. The program begins at 6pm with 2 award winning shorts and 3 feature films will be presented.
The shorts are Boneshaker and Unspoken from Ghana and Nigeria respectively. Boneshaker, directed by Frances Bodomo and starring Oscar Nominee Quvenzhané Wallis, premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Outsider is directed by Sunny King, an award winning director of shorts and promos and founder of OAKMAN film. He was runner-up on Project Talent UK 2007 and had his first short film 'Signs' selected for the Woodgreen International Film Festival 2009.
The first feature, Alaskaland is directed by Chinonye Chukwu a Nigerian-born, Alaskan-raised filmmaker and recipient of the prestigious Princess Grace Award and the Princeton Hodder Fellowship. "AlaskaLand" has been selected to screen globally.
The next feature is The White Wedding, a thrilling, romantic comedy set in South Africa, directed by Jann Turner, born in France and is the oldest daughter of South African activist Rick Turner and British politician Barbara Follett. Jann has also made award-winning documentaries and worked for two years as part of the team of producers who made the Truth Commission Special Report during Nelson Mandela's presidency.
The final feature of the evening "Nairobi Half-life" is directed by Kenyan born David "Tosh" Gitonga who has worked on feature films since 2002. In 2010 he enrolled in the One Fine Day Film Workshop's, where he was selected to direct his first feature film Nairobi Half Life under the supervision of Tom Tykwer.
African crafts, art and other products will be available for purchase from 5- 6pm and during breaks throughout the evening. The Tuscaloosa Evening of African Film is presented by the Edward A. Ulzen Memorial Foundation (EAUMF) and Afram South Inc., two non-profit organizations supporting education and public health initiatives in Ghana, West Africa and West Alabama respectively. It is also co- sponsored by Tuscaloosa Sister Cities. Tuscaloosa is a sister city of Sunyani Techiman in Ghana.
Tickets are: General admission - $10.00; Students and youth - $6.00.
