THE ZOO STORY and gallery exhibit of Christopher Sweeney's paintings: DISARMED
In his Los Angeles directorial debut, Max Hartman (Eighteen, Road, Bash), delves into the cauldron of human need with his astute interpretation of The Zoo Story, by Edward Albee. Set in Central Park East on a sun drenched Sunday afternoon, the bucolic setting gradually gives way to an alternately intriguing and tense irrepressible force as territorial boundaries and social norms blur.
When the contentedly sedentary Peter, played by Dion Jackson (American Midget, The Knights of Mary Phagan), is methodically prodded by an unexpected visitor -- enigmatic and fiercely graphic Jerry, played by Christopher Sweeney (When We Dead Awaken, The Water Engine) -- we witness an intriguing juxtaposition of personalities that draws us toward an abrupt conclusion. The Zoo Story, now fifty years young, remains a deftly charted journey of oblique humor, desperation, and a nagging demand for the definition of what it means to be human. Originally rejected by New York City producers for its pessimistic take on contemporary society, The Zoo Story was first staged In West Berlin at the Schiller Theater Werkstatt on September 28, 1959.
Producers Noel Balacuit (USVAA Literay Manager) and Keith Jeffreys (USVAA Artistic Director) are eager to bring this socially relevant production to the USVAA stage. Along with Max Hartman's keen dissection of Albee's first work, comes the debut exhibition of decorated Combat veteran Christopher Sweeney's most recent series of paintings, DISARMED. Through both his theater work and paintings, Sweeney aims to illuminate the connection between the debilitating impact of warfare and the detrimental effects of urban isolation, decay and social despair. As a result, the production and exhibit reverberate with relevance in a time of continuous warfare throughout a constantly shrinking world.
The Zoo Story opens Friday, February 27, 2009 and runs through Saturday March 21, 2009. Shows run Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.
