Beekeeping 101

Beekeeping 101 = Introductory Beekeepers Seminar:

Friday (2/21/2014) from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM and continues Saturday (2/22/2014) from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This seminar consists of lectures: Planting a Bee Friendly Yard & Garden; Honey Bee Biology-Seasonal Hive Management; Beekeeping Equipment Choices and Uses; Buying or Selling Honeybees & State Required Inspections; Swarming-keeping your bee's in their hive; Getting Started in Beekeeping "The Myths and Rumors"; as well as hands-on break-out sessions where beekeepers will be available to "Talk Bee's" as they discuss the latest beekeeping techniques and answer all of your questions. There will also be a routine hive inspection training session March 22, 2014 from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm (weather permitting) where all students will assist our beekeepers light the smokers as you suit up to get an up close and personal view of the brood nest filled with eggs, larva, pollen, and nectar as we search to locate the elusive queen.

Dr. Sean Kenny and the VA State Apiarist Keith Tignor.
