Event
"The Gin Game" by D. L. Coburn
Featuring Ciel and Bill Bottomly in a Tragi-Comedy in Two Acts, winner of the 1978 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Cards: the ultimate metaphor for life. Play them as they're dealt to you, but don't tip your hand too early and don't underestimate Luck.
The story: Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey, residents of a retirement home, strike up a friendship when Weller decides to teach Fonsia to play Gin Rummy. They forge a bond in their mutual dislike of the home, their lack of visitors, and their desire to be seen as something besides people on their way to the grave. But when Fonsia turns out to be incapable of losing at Gin, and Weller incapable of controlling his anger, the secrets they have shared about themselves turn into weapons they use on one another. It is a vibrant study on loneliness, disillusion, old age and death, yet fiercely funny. [Boston Globe]
