WPA SPRING FESTIVAL | THE MAIN EVENT
Around the World in Poetry: A Translation Experiment
7PM on Saturday 25 April at Hugo House

TRANSLATION PANEL 7PM
The evening starts with a moderated discussion about translation, literary and non-literary, with representatives from the foreign language, nonsense language, performance, dance and contact improv communities. Panelists include Zachary Schomburg, Vanessa DeWolf, Andrea Lingenfelter, Debby Watt and Lyn Coffin. Panel moderator is non other than the renowned NW literary journalist, Dave Jarecki! This hour-long, pre-show event is included in the cost of your ticket.

AROUND THE WORLD IN POETRY 8PM
Get ready for poetry in languages (Hebrew, German, French, Japanese, Mandarin, Romanaccio, Spanish). We've asked the non-poets to take the stage, native speakers from other cultures, to read their favorite poems in their native tongue. What a treat. Sit back and listen to the rhythms of poetry.

A TRANSLATION EXPERIMENT 9PM
The best of Seattle come together to experiment. Can we transform a single poem into 5 different art forms? Christian Swenson move and tone and give voice to a secret source poem, Keely Isaak Meehan will then dance this same poem, after Barbara Anne Allin has transformed it into a floral installation, before Linden Ontjes works it into code, or footnotes, or who knows what, all knowing that 6-year old Horatio Cordero brought it to life weeks ago visually.

THE AUDIENCE AS TRANSLATOR
After weve seen the poem move through various forms, well take a study break and try to write the poem again in English, all of us, yes the entire audience! Well generate at least as many poems as there are audience members. Each person will bring theirs forward to contribute to our collective understanding. And well wander around the stage taking it all in, these words and objects. Finally, well be sent home with a sealed envelope containing the secret source poem. And a very good night to ye!

What more could you want? A raffle? OK, weve got that too! $1/raffle ticket at the event.

WORKSHOPS
Two workshops complement this event. At 10AM literary translator, Andrea Lingenfelter, widely acclaimed for her translation of Farewell My Concubine, will lead a 2-hour workshop guiding participants through the process of literary translation. NO foreign language skills are needed. If you've ever been interested in the idea of translation, this class makes a nice introduction. At 1PM, Poet Laureate Sam Green will lead a 3-hour poetry workshop (his take on the translation theme is in how we translate our human experiences into poetry). Learn from the poet who's enthralled, educated and embraced the State of Poetry in Washington!

10AM-12PM
TRANSLATION WORKSHOP
Andrea Lingenfelter
