Event
Fern Identification and Ecology Workshop
Description Chris Hoess will introduce key traits used for fern identification, give participants a sense of the diversity and ecological context of Pennsylvania ferns, and lead a field trip to a nearby site with high fern diversity. The morning session will be indoors, including lecture with slides and the chance to inspect a range of herbarium specimens. After a break for lunch, participants will drive to the nearby field site to see local ferns in the wild, including both common and unusual species. (Participants can pack a lunch or buy one in Millersville.)
Date August 13, 2022
Time 9 a.m. 4 p.m.
Location: TBA (tentatively, morning session at Millersville University; afternoon in the field at Lock 12). Participants will drive or carpool from the university to the field site. Abundant parking is available.
Professor Hoess teaches at Delaware Technical Community College. His academic background is in organic chemistry and molecular biology, and he has a longstanding passion for (and expertise in) ferns and fern allies.
